Southeast Georgia Real Estate We make it happen...

St Simons Island Real Estate

St. Simons Island is a community of southern charm and natural beauty, located in Brunswick, in Glynn County, GA.  St. Simons Island was reported in the 2000 census as having a population of 13,381.  St. Simons Island, GA is largest island of the renowned Golden Isles.  Others in that group are Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Little St. Simons Island.

The town is also a resort community with many seasonal residents, but has a steady base of year-round residents as well.  Those who call this home are often retired individuals from other parts of Georgia or elsewhere in the United States.

During the American colonial period, St. Simon Island was sometimes home to John Wesley who later founded the Methodist Church.  However, while doing his missionary work at St. Simon, he was with the Anglican Church.

One particularly notable attraction of St. Simon Island, GA is the lighthouse located near the entrance to St. Simons Sound.  It was built in 1811.  The Confederate Army blew up the original octagonal tower in 1861 to keep it out of the hands of the Union forces.  It was rebuilt, updated, automated, and still is operational today.

Another well-known attraction of St. Simon Island is Fort Frederica National Monument which was built to protect the southern boundary of the British colony in Georgia from Spanish aggression.  Once that aggression was gone, the garrison was disbanded and the town fell into decline and was abandoned.  Nearly two hundred years later, the Fort was excavated and was authorized as a national monument.  Today it is open to the public.

St Simons Island real estate offers many types of housing to suit your desires.  Some of the communities offer homes situated in a panoramic setting among 300-year-old oaks, draped in Spanish moss, and water views and nearby golf courses.

Development of St Simons Island real estate is a blend of old and new, with a fair emphasis on new.  The homes offered include old beach cottages or bungalows and ranch-style houses.  The newer construction tends more toward grand, luxury condos and up-scale subdivisions designed with gracious living in mind.  Some homes offer an ocean front location or marsh or deep water properties.  There are an increasing number of golf course properties as well.

St Simons Island is rich in history.  Scattered throughout the island you will find structures reminiscent of the early settlers, as well as plantations that were prominent for generations.  If you are interested in a historic area offering a modern lifestyle, you will find St Simons Island real estate a perfect choice for you and your family.
