Sea Island is an isolated resort island which is located in Glynn County just off the coast of southern Georgia. Sea Island is one of the four islands known as the Golden Isles of Georgia.
In 1922, Howard Coffin, who owned Hudson Motor Company, purchased what had been called Long Island and renamed it Sea Island. Six years later, he began an overnight inn and lodge which he called "The Cloister.” The Plantation Golf Course was built the following year, making the area was a magnet for the industrialists and other notable figures of that era. The area was referred to informally as "Millionaire's Island," because the land on the island was privately owned by some of the wealthiest families in the United States.
After the Great Depression, the wealthy began to vacation in other areas, but The Cloister remained a spot for the most exclusive clientele. Today, land on Sea Island is controlled privately, public access is limited and the island is owned by the Sea Island Company.
In late 2004, the Sea Island Company closed The Cloister and it was torn down to make room for a new hotel with many of the same architectural features as the former building, for instance, the famous 1928 Spanish Lounge from The Cloister was dismantled and completely rebuilt in the new hotel. The Sea Island Beach Club, a resort facility accommodating the island's visitors from The Cloister and residents, was also rebuilt and opened July 2007.
Guests can enjoy Sea Island's 10,000 acres of forest and marshland and many outdoor and indoor activities such as sailing, sea kayaking, horseback riding, biking, tennis, clay target shooting, nature and much more.
Since 1928, Sea Island GA real estate has ranged from quaint seaside cottages to exquisite estates. A private home on Sea Island offers a peaceful retreat in a place of timeless values and a connection with nature.
Offering more than a lifestyle of simple pleasures like a day at the beach, golfing with friends, and an evening of dining and dancing, Sea Island GA real estate provides plenty of family activities so you can create a legacy that you can be proud of.
